Just about everything is easier when there’s someone in charge. A go-to person that knows what’s going on and keeps things moving forward. In the business world these people are often called project managers.

When you need to move offices approach it like you would any project at your business. One of the first things you should do is appoint an office move project manager.

Who Makes a Good Office Move Project Manager?

An office move is an undeniably big project. Bigger than any house move. So don’t expect it will be as smooth as personal moves of the past. There will be a lot of people to coordinate, sensitive information to protect and expensive equipment to get from one place to another safely. A good candidate for the job will:

Be highly organized.

With that many moving pieces an office move project manager has got to be darn good at juggling a lot of balls at once. If a person is the type that leverages technology, always hits deadlines and can think laterally, they are a good candidate.

Take the job seriously.

Someone who is going to slack off, not do their homework or think it’s just a side project that doesn’t have much bearing on the business probably isn’t well suited to be the office move project manager. Moving is serious business and an ill planned move can end up costing more than it should.

Know a lot of the people in the office.

The office move project manager will need to work with everyone to get the move done. They’ll be communicating with the entire office, so if they are already friendly with most employees it makes things that much easier.

Have the bandwidth to take on the job.

Someone that is already overloaded with work or a key part of an important ongoing project, shouldn’t be tapped as the office move manager – no matter how good they are for the job. The office move project manager will need to put a lot of time and attention into the move to make it happen as quickly and smoothly as possible.

What the Office Move Project Manager Will Be in Charge Of

In short – a lot. The office move project manager will have a lot on his or her plate for at least a solid month or two while the move is planned and carried out.

Within this laundry list there are even more to-dos. The move project manager may need to take on a little less responsibility in the regular day-to-day operations in order to make sure everything is handled for the move. With the right person in place, you should have no problem keeping your business chugging along during the transition period.
