So you have decided to have a garage sale before your big move, aren’t you a smart fella or gal! If you weren’t thinking about having a garage sale, we strongly recommend it. Who wants to move a bunch of extra junk that you are just going to have to figure out a way to dispose of at your new place. Planning and hosting a garage sale in the middle of preparing for a big move can seem daunting, just follow this list and you will be well on your way to having the best garage sale ever!
- Advertise- Post your garage sale on Craig’s List (free advertising), prepare some yard sales signs, and consider placing an ad in the paper.
- Pre-Sale- You may have some family members, friends, or know some younger couples that are looking for wares to set up their first house. Letting friends and acquaintances know about your sale and allowing them to come by beforehand will increase your chance of selling more items. You will also have the added bonus of helping out your friends and family which you will soon be living farther away from.
- Gather Together- Use the same relationships with the aforementioned friends and neighbors to do a combination sale. You will sell more and make more money when you combine your family’s wares with others!
- Pick-up- Schedule an end of the day pick-up in the later afternoon from an organization like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Not only will you be donating to charity, but you won’t have to worry about getting rid of everything that didn’t sale. An end of the day pick-up will ensure that everything is gone in one day and you will be ready for your move!
