If you are insistent on asking your friends for help moving, despite the fact that you are no longer college students and now own a house full of stuff, here are some tips to help you avoid a mutiny.
- Have everything packed before your friends arrive. Nothing is going to make your friends feel more like the biggest suckers, than to arrive at a house where nothing has been done in preparation for the move. In addition to some “help” that may end up needing to leave early, these friends will surely remember your unpreparedness and never help you move again.
- Ask many friends not a few friends. The more people you have helping you move, the less work everyone will have to do. An army of friends will ensure that the same two people don’t make a zillion trips up and down the stairs. People also may not be available to help the whole day, but several people may have a few chunks of time so that they can come over in shifts.
- Just pizza and beer aren’t going to cut it. If you have friends helping you move, you should be beyond grateful. In addition to some celebratory beer and pizza at the end of the moving day, there better be hot coffee and fresh donuts and pastries waiting for your friends when they arrive in the morning! Have water available throughout the day , for any necessary breaks.
Most importantly be thankful that you have THAT great of friends and thank them for helping you move!
