The modern household is full of electronics, ranging from computers and TVs to tablets and gaming systems. Here are a few packing tips to help you get your electronics ready for a move.
- The safest and best way to move electronics is in their original boxes. If you have saved all or some of the boxes your electronics came in, now is the time to bust them out. Each electronic will perfectly fit in its original box and there is probably space to store all the accompanying parts and accessories.
- Packing peanuts are loaded with static electricity, so they should not be used to pack electronics. Opt for bubble wrap or other antistatic materials instead. A roll of white packing paper or even old towels will also work.
- When packing a printer remove the toner and ink cartridges and seal them in a plastic bag. Remove any other moveable parts of the printer and wrap them up. Place the printer, the heaviest part at the bottom of the box and store all the other parts in the same box so nothing gets lost or separated.
- Dismantling electronics and all the cords is easier than assembling everything and connecting all the cords in their new location. To make this process easier take tape and a sharpie to create corresponding labels for each port and cord. For instance, take a small piece of tape labelled “A”and put it underneath a port. Then take the accompanying cord, create a coil and secure it by taping around it with a piece of tape that is also labelled “A”. Now, when you being the unpacking process, you will know exactly where to plug in the “A”cord and it won’t be tangled.
- Pack only full boxes, use crumpled paper to fill any holes in boxes to help protect the electronic items inside.
- Mark boxes that contain electronics as fragile and indicate which end is up.
- Consider which of your electronics are sensitive and may not be able to handle high temperatures like CDs, software, computers or TVs.
