Sometimes we wish we could borrow Mary Poppins’ bag to help with a move. How nice would it be if everything just fit into one bag? But can you imagine the mess at the bottom of Mary Poppins’ bag? All of those objects jumbled together, you would have to run around from room to room putting all your furniture in its proper place. One benefit to moving in boxes is that you can move in an organized fashion.
The phrase, “A place for everything and everything in its place” comes to mind when discussing an organized move. The origin of this phrase has been attributed to several individuals including: Samuel Siles, Mrs. Isabella Beeton and Benjamin Franklin. Some sources date the origin of this phrase as far back as the seventeenth century. This homily really gained traction in the Victorian era when similar phrases like “cleanliness is next to godliness” were popular.
The general idea of this phrase is that everything should have a place to be stored and that it should be summarily returned to that specific place when not in use. This is a hard concept to accomplish during a move when nothing is stationary and everything is in flux and transition. You will probably feel the most settled and organized after a move, when you can establish a place for everything in your new home. However, there is one simple way that you can apply this principle during a move and save yourself a lot of headaches and searching.
Create a moving box packing survival kit and you will save both time and sanity! Simply get a small (preferably clear and plastic) box, this is your new “place”. In the box you will put scissors, a sharpie, packing tape, a measuring tape and a box cutter. All of these objects have a new “home” that can travel with you from room to room and from your old house to your new home. All too often these smaller objects, which you will repeatedly need and use, can become lost under cardboard and packing materials. Every time after you use one of these objects, simply return it to its box. This will make your life much easier as you pack and prepare for a move. The surfaces of your tables and counters will quickly fill up with books and dishes as you begin packing for your move. Keeping up with one clear plastic box is much easier than keeping track of five separate objects. If you can train yourself to return these objects to their specific place, you will have a much simpler and smoother move. Of course, you can always call Square Cow Movers for help if you get overwhelmed with the process.
As your move begins to progress, you may even decide to add your keys and cell phone to your survival kit, so that those important things also do not get lost under a mountain of boxes and packing materials.
