With folks continuing to move to Austin, it’s exciting to see all the new things that are coming to our flourishing city. We’re getting bigger events, more attractions, more food choices, and better cultural and education enrichment programs. Right now the Bullock Texas State History Museum is hosting the Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, Most Amazing Mammals of All Time exhibit. And it’s wonderful.
Because we have families with little bovines in need of stimulation and education, we are very thankful to the Bullock Museum for all they do. As cows, we have an interest in our ancestors, just like anyone, but the way they’ve put this particular exhibit together makes it fascinating for everyone. They have interactive displays, computer simulations, fossils, model re-creations of all sorts, and lots of other really interesting displays that will keep y’all entertained for an afternoon.
It’s crazy to think there was once a mammal that could sit on the eraser of a pencil, or a herbivore four times the size of today’s biggest elephants, or that 99 percent of all life that has ever lived on this big blue planet is now extinct. Did you know that there were five mass extinctions, and that we may be on the verge of a sixth?
Also, be sure to check out the Bullock Museum’s special events surrounding the exhibit:
- On January 18th the museum is hosting the Extreme Family Fest from noon until 3 p.m., where kids can discover the “wild world of Texas mammals” and experience a live mammal meet and greet.
- On February 8th experience Extreme Mammals in Your Own Backyard from 8 a.m. – 4p.m. This $55 event starts at the museum with a guided tour around the Extreme Mammals exhibit and then travels to the Bamberger Ranch for a private tour featuring a habitat restoration project, dinosaur tracks, fossils and a man-made cave housing one million bats! Space on this tour is very limited and advance reservations are required; please call (512) 936-4649. Reservation fees include admission to both sites, transportation and lunch.
As we watch Austin grow alongside the rest of the world, we cows believe it’s very important to remind ourselves and educate our young’uns about all the wonderful and amazing things that exist outside of our normal spheres of influence. History tells us a lot about ourselves. Understanding what came before gives a foundation to process what’s next. We love the world we live in, which means we should want to know more about it. Thankfully, the Bullock Museum makes it interesting.
Now that the holidays are winding down and the kids are getting antsy, consider moseying your way over to see what other crazy creatures existed before us. And ask your kids, what do you think the animals of the world are going to be like in the future? What do you want them to be like? Be sure to record those answers because they are guaranteed to be entertaining.
