If your kids are begging for a beach getaway this summer, but you don’t have the time to plan for or go on an extended vacation, consider a quick trip to Galveston.  Galveston is a coastal city of almost 50,000 located on an island in the Gulf.  The city was a major center of trade and immigration during the nineteenth century.  After a terrible hurricane in 1900, which killed between 6,000 and 8,000, the city rebuilt and Galveston is now mainly a tourist destination that has retained its historic charm. Galveston has beaches, the Strand, historic sites, restaurants and many other attractions for families.  The following are a few of our favorites.

What to Do

Bishop’s Palace – This structure was built in 1892 and is considered one of the country’s most significant Victorian residences.  There are daily guided tours 7 days a week, where you can view the furnished interior and learn more about the people who lived there.

Pleasure Pier – If you are taking the kiddos to Galveston, this is an attraction that will be hard to miss.  Situated in the middle of the beach, the Pleasure Pier is full of restaurants and rides.

The Strand – The historic downtown district of Galveston is known as the Strand and is compromised of shops, historic buildings, museums and restaurants.

Where to Eat

The Spot – This is a beachfront restaurant with multilevel patios and great views of the Gulf of Mexico.  The Spot is a great place to grab a burger for lunch.

Rudy and Paco’s  – A bit more upscale, Rudy and Paco’s offers grilled seafood and steak with a South and Central American flair.  If you want to eat dinner here, reservations are recommended. Also please note that shorts are not allowed in the main dining room after lunch.

Gaido’s – Gaido’s is famous for their fresh seafood and first opened in 1911.

Where to Stay

Hotel Galvez – To fully immerse yourself in the historic Galveston experience, we recommend Hotel Galvez.  This beautiful historic hotel first opened over a 100 years ago. It has a spa and an incredible Sunday brunch.

The Tremont – This is another beautiful hotel with an historic atmosphere in Galveston that still has all the modern amenities.

The Galvestonian – If you are looking for a resort style experience on Galveston, the beachfront Galvestonian condos are a great option for your family.

Texans have been vacationing in Galveston since before the turn of the century and we hope your family can take a weekend to do the same this summer!
