There’s been a lot of talk about all the people that are moving to Austin, but in actuality the population is increasing all over the state. Us cows that have been grazing here a while know that population growth is nothing new for Texas. The last few decades have seen a steady uptick in the number of people that call the Lone Star State home, which is great for our Texas moving company.
Here’s a quick look at the latest numbers as well as population trends that have developed over time.
Who’s Moving to Texas Today
Last December the U.S. Census Bureau released information that showed Texas gained more new residents than any other state in the nation.
- 1.3 million people moved to Texas between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2013.
- Austin was the fastest growing metro area in 2013. San Marcos (#1), Cedar Park (#4) and Georgetown (#7) were all in the top 10 fastest growing cities with over 50,000 people.
- Frisco, TX just outside of Dallas was the second fastest growing city in 2013. Odessa, McKinney and Pearland just outside of Houston also made the top 15 list.
- Every day approximately 110 people are moving to Austin.
- Austin is #1 for the Millennial population (people born after 1980).
- In 2012 it was estimated that 125 people a day moved to Houston through migration alone. It was ranked fourth in the nation for migration population.
Trends in Texas Population Growth
Demographics from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts show that since the boom began in 2000 the population is becoming more diverse and urban. In 2004 the state became majority-minority meaning there is an overall slightly larger number of ethnic minority populations than Caucasians. Statistics also show that since 1950 the rural population has steadily declined while the urban population has grown.
Even though Texas is outpacing other populations it has slowed in recent years. The first decade of 2000 was the real boom time for the state, which had an average 2% increase each year. So far the second decade has had a 1.6% increase year-over-year. This could be a sign that more areas are recovering since the Great Recession.
It’s not just people moving here that’s leading to the population growth. There are also a lot of new little Texans being born everyday. In 2010, there were 386,096 births with 15.4 births per 1,000 people. That’s slightly higher than the national average of 13 births per 1,000. Overall birth rates are going down, but in a state as large as Texas it’s still a significant factor.
We’re growing fast, but we’re not the fastest growing state in the nation. The last census release had Texas sitting in the third spot with 5.2% population growth since 2010. North Dakota actually had the biggest increase at 7.6% and Washington, D.C. jumped up by 7.4%. Of course, numbers wise Texas still added a lot more people.
